Dan Mazur

Mr. John Daniel Mazur, 56, of Columbia, died Friday, August 26, 2016. Born October 26, 1959 in East Cleveland, OH, he was a son of the late John H. Mazur and Marjorie Akers Mazur. Before moving to SC, Dan attended Indiana Wesleyan and Villanova Universities. He went to work in December of 2001 as a customer service representative, and finally as an analyst with Verizon Wireless Dan was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and formerly of Reformation Lutheran Church, where he worked with the Hispanic Mission helping with children under the direction of Sandy Jones. He loved gardening, fishing, camping, going to the beach, and was a great cook who loved to eat. Some of his passions included keeping up with 56 years of friends on Facebook, photography, and Pet’s Inc. from where his beloved dogs, Buddy and Cocoa, were adopted. He had an acerbic whit, and never met a stranger. Dan always looked forward to the invites to “Bad Food Friday” with neighbors, Nancy and Mike Brown; a simple gathering of friends sharing bad food and possibly a cocktail or two. Survivors include his husband, Joe Matthews; stepdaughter, Jennifer Davis; step granddaughter, Emmilie Davis; sisters, Susan Mazur, and Mary Juarez (Greg); mother-in-law, Dorothy Talley Matthews; sister-in-law, Cheryl Bayne (Dale); nieces, Kristen Kollu (Phani), and Brittany Floyd (Brent); nephews, Darryl Bayne (Kayla), Derick Bayne, and Zachary Juarez; as well as one great-niece. A service to celebrate Dan’s life will be held 3 o’clock, Tuesday, August 30th at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext. Columbia, with The Rev. Dr. Tony A Metze officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 2 o’clock. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be made to Pet’s Inc. 300 Orchard Drive, Box 6394, West Columbia, SC 29171.
